Hard or soft shell luggage: how to compare
Choose a suitcase by how it will be used, then compare the actual models. Hard and soft shell describe the construction; neither label tells you everything about the weight, fittings or packing layout.

Start with access and layout
Look at the open case, not just the exterior. Compare the packing compartments, straps, dividers and accessible pockets. A front pocket may matter if you want to reach something without opening the main compartment. Check that the model you choose actually has the layout you need.
- Open the interior photographs for both shortlisted models.
- Compare what can be reached with the main compartment closed.
- Check the handles and wheel layout as well as the shell.
Compare like-for-like sizes
Compare complete external dimensions and empty weight at the same size. A larger case is not a fair weight comparison with a smaller one. Where capacity is published, use the stated packing volume rather than calculating it from the exterior box.
- Record height, width and depth.
- Use the published weight for the specific size.
- Ask for missing measurements rather than estimating them.
Check expansion, locks and warranty separately
These are model-specific features. Do not assume every soft case expands or that every hard case carries the same lock. Warranty terms also belong to the collection, not to the shell category.
- Read the expansion entry on the product page.
- Check the named lock and closure.
- Use the warranty stated for the actual collection.
For retailers: give each model a reason to be in the range
Build a shortlist around your customers, price positioning and size mix. A hard and a soft collection can serve different requirements, but carrying both only helps if the differences are clear to your staff and customers. Send the shortlist with your market and expected quantities for a proposal.
