Goods brought into the European Union from outside it may not be placed on the market unless an economic operator established in the Union is responsible for them — holding the technical documentation, acting as the contact for market surveillance authorities, and handling a recall if one is ever required. That operator’s name and address must appear on the product or its packaging.

Carlton is manufactured in India and Bangladesh and owned by VIP Industries, an Indian company. British Luggage Group is a Swedish company, established in the territory it supplies, and is able to act in that role for the ranges it places on the market.

For a retailer this is the difference between importing on your own account — becoming the responsible operator yourself, with the documentation and liability that carries — and buying from a counterpart already inside the Union.

The policy is not a statement of intent. Observance of it is written into agreements and contracts between us and our suppliers and partners, it establishes minimum standards that may not be lowered, and it extends to sub-suppliers: it is the supplier’s responsibility to ensure their own suppliers do not violate it.

Luggage sold in the Union falls under the chemicals regime: Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH) on the registration, evaluation and authorisation of chemicals, Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) on classification and labelling, and Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 on persistent organic pollutants. The substance groups that arise in this product category are plasticisers and phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances.

Our supplier is bound by contract to comply with the applicable law of the market, and we hold a right of inspection. Substance declarations and test reports for a given range are issued by the manufacturer; we obtain them for the ranges we supply and pass them to you.

Carlton carries a three year international warranty on the hard shell collections and five years on the soft shell ranges, stated per collection on each product page. The warranty is the brand owner’s.

A case that comes back is handled by the Carlton service team. Your staff hand the case over and the matter leaves your floor: we run the claim with the brand owner on your behalf, and you do not carry the cost of the replacement.

Carlton is a British brand, established in London in 1976, and the name is British in origin and in use. The goods are not manufactured in Britain: Carlton luggage is produced in India and Bangladesh.

No flag, no origin marking and no "British made" claim appears against any product on this site, and none may be added. The company is British-named and Swedish-registered; the manufacture is stated here and on our legal notice.
